Peruvian Attorney General Pablo Sanchez is confident fugitive ex-President Alejandro Toledo will be extradited from the United States —where he is believed to be hiding—to Peru.
The Prosecutor's Office is doing a good job filing its requests for U.S. authorities to send the former official back to the Andean nation. Toledo has been
wanted by Peruvian authorities since last February.
"We are making progress with the available resources. Besides, the extradition process tends to be lengthy and slow, but it will happen," he told Andina news agency.
"They are the most interested in extraditing and expelling a prosecuted person. No one would like to host someone who might have committed offenses. He has a lot to say to the country," he affirmed.
The authority asserted his office will keep on working and refrain from questioning others.
As is known, the former Head of State was indicted for money laundering in 2013 after irregular real-estate transactions through offshore firm Ecoteva —founded by his mother-in-law Eva Fernenbug— were unveiled.
Ecoteva funds were used to purchase a house and offices in Lima. Resources were also used to pay off the mortgages on
Toledo's estates.
Moreover, the Prosecutor's Office claims Brazilian company Odebrecht would have paid Toledo US$20 million in graft to be awarded the Interoceanica Highway.
