Recently-sworn-in President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday afternoon led the ceremony to enact the bill aimed at strengthening the Comptroller General's Office.

The Head of State noted such bill will provide a better balance between the speed of budget implementation —aimed at the country's reconstruction— and the necessary inspections to avoid corruption acts.

"[…] we are confident that we will work faster and control resources more efficiently," Mr. Vizcarra expressed.

The President also said less than 10% of the budget —allocated to this process— has been implemented so far.

"If we keep that pace, we will achieve such goal in 10 years. It’s too much time. People can’t wait," he stressed as he recalled that at least 5,000 victims affected by Coastal El Niño phenomenon are still waiting for help.

According to the statesman, one of the most important aspects of this law is that it guarantees the presence of control units in regional and local governments, which directly depend on the Comptroller General's Office.

Finally, the high-ranking government official explained the recently-enacted bill intends to show his administration is committed to the fight against corruption.

Held at the Government Palace, the event was also attended by Congress Chairman Luis Galarreta and Comptroller General of the Republic Nelson Shack.
