President Martin Vizcarra on Friday enacted a law establishing the implementation of a human rights approach in favor of natural disaster victims.
Promoted by the Ombudsman's Office, the purpose of this law is to put citizens as the
reconstruction process' central axis.
As is known, the Inca nation was at the mercy of
Coastal El Niño phenomenon last year. The event was characterized by heavy rains, landslides, and floods, which left thousands of citizens homeless.
"The real pain is not in the destruction of cement and steel structures, which can be replaced, but in the human lives that were lost, as well as in the thousands of families living on the streets (…)," the statesman remarked.
Focused on the victims' rights, this law will not only restore
affected families' quality of life but also improve it.
It also seeks to prevent families from falling apart by providing emotional support to victims, as well as eradicating any type of exploitation and violence.
The ceremony took place at Lima-based Government Palace in the presence of Ombudsman Walter Gutierrez.
