Agrarian Development-Irrigation Minister Nelly Paredes del Castillo welcomed the solidary support provided by the United States of America, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and by the World Food Programme (WFP) in response to the emergency situation caused by Cyclone Yaku in Peru.

This support consists of the donation —from the North American country through USAID— of 12 water pumps, 88 hoses, and other supplies to drain water from flooded areas.

For its part, the WFP immediately offered to transfer the donated implements to the affected areas, being 9 pumps destined for Piura region and the remaining 3 for Lima provinces.

Minister Paredes del Castillo also thanked USAID for the prompt response to the request for support issued —as a result of the disasters caused by heavy rainfall which triggered floods and landslides on the Peruvian coast.

In this sense, the Cabinet member underscored that international cooperation between the two countries has a long history.

She added that the North American country has accompanied Peru in its development processes, proving "its interest and deep commitment to the development of agriculture in our country."

In turn, U.S. Ambassador to Peru, Lisa Kenna, expressed her most sincere condolences to the citizens affected by Cyclone Yaku and the earthquake that occurred in Tumbes region last weekend.

The diplomat noted that the U.S. will continue to support Peru, especially in difficult times, so that the risk of disaster can be reduced in the South American country.

Lastly, the envoy recognized the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) and other Peruvian authorities due to the work carried out during the emergency caused by floods and river overflows. Said efforts allowed the population to be safeguarded.
