Peru's EsSalud: COVID-19 infections up 70% nationwide

In epidemiological week 25 (from June 19 to 25), 17,841 new COVID-19 cases were reported nationwide, an increase of 70% compared to the previous week, when 10,497 people were found infected, the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) reported.

According to a statistical report, infections increased in 39 districts across Lima and Callao over the last week.

The district of Santiago de Surco reported the highest number of cases for the second consecutive week, going from 881 to 1,256.

After Santiago de Surco, another district that saw a sharp rise in new infections is Cercado de Lima, which comprises the historic downtown area of the city. New cases in this area went from 677 to 1,158.

Next in the list came San Borja, going from 461 to 790 new cases, followed by Magdalena del Mar (from 418 to 710), Jesus Maria (from 421 to 63), La Molina (from 463 to 613), San Isidro (from 340 to 426), and San Miguel (from 256 to 414).

Similarly, an increase in infections has been recorded in Surquillo (from 251 to 326 cases), Chorrillos (158 to 309), Pueblo Libre (from 193 to 299), San Martin de Porres (from 139 to 283), Lince (from 131 to 262) San Juan de Lurigancho (from 157 to 251), and Ate (from 133 to 235), among other districts.

Situation across the country

The increase in COVID-19 cases was also observed in all regions across the country.

Lima and Arequipa reported the highest number of cases for the second consecutive week, with 11,254 and 2,188 infections, respectively.

Another region that reported the most infections is Ancash (875 cases), followed by Cusco (747 cases), Junin (482), Callao (356), La Libertad (335), Moquegua (281), Ica (224), and Lambayeque (200 cases).
