Peru's soccer team returns home after journey to Qatar

12:14 | Doha (Qatar), Jun. 14.

The Peruvian national soccer team boarded a charter flight from Doha, Qatar, to set out on its return to Lima after losing to Australia 5-4 on penalties and failing to qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The Blanquirroja (Red-White Team) is expected to arrive in the Peruvian capital Lima in the evening.

Photographs on social media show the moment the players left the Hyatt Regency Oryx Hotel in Doha for the airport in order to board the plane that will bring them back home.

The players, who looked visibly sad and in low spirits, refrained from delivering remarks or saying anything on their way to the shuttle bus.

However, Gianluca Lapadula brought himself to address the fans: "Have a good trip, guys. Go Peru."

Not all players will arrive today at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport since some will catch a connecting flight, while others will return to the countries where they play.

After the playoff game, the national soccer team was disbanded, and decisions on the players' future regarding a new qualifying cycle and other competitions will be announced in the coming days.
