Peru exported quinoa worth more than US$90 million in 2022, with the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands as main destinations, authorities reported in commemoration of Regional Quinoa Day in Puno.

This cereal is known as the "golden grain of the Andes" for its extraordinary nutritional properties and rich content of protein and minerals, which are characteristics that make quinoa a product with great potential in the domestic and foreign markets.

The varieties with the highest export volumes in 2022 were white quinoa (US$56 million), red quinoa (US$16 million), tri-color quinoa (US$12 million), and black quinoa (US$4 million).

In order to commemorate the Regional Quinoa Day in Puno, 10 producer organizations and institutions linked to quinoa production in said region were recognized by Sierra y Selva Exportadora-SSE (Exporting Andes and Jungle) —an entity attached to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).

SSE, a strategic ally

SSE Executive President Percy Medina affirmed that the institution that he leads is a strategic ally of small-sized producers in various production chains.

Medina explained that Sierra and Selva Exportadora promotes the consumption of these products by highlighting the nutritional benefits of foods such as quinoa and, by doing so, improves producers' quality of life.

The official also highlighted the work undertaken by the Regional Government of Puno in promoting production chains.

In addition, he stressed the importance of recognizing producer organizations, since quinoa "represents a significant portion of income in the region."
