Low-cost airline Volaris has started operations in Peru with routes connecting Mexico City and Cancun with Lima; the San Jose-Lima route will be operated soon.

Volaris Executive Vice President Holger Blankenstein remarked that the airline wants to be part of the Peruvian government's strategy to promote tourism as a fundamental pillar of the economy, through a business model seeking to democratize the sky so that more people can travel in better conditions.

"We want to be part of the commercial aviation transformation in Peru as we expand our successful business model in South America to democratize the sky so that more people can fly," he said.

Volaris will use two aircraft for its operations in Lima and will offer more than 25,000 seats per month on ultra-low-cost flights to boost the air passenger market with lower base fares and using a scheme in which customers decide how to travel, paying only for the additional services they need.

"We are promoting air connectivity in our country with a firm determination to return to pre-pandemic rates. To do so, we must continue to create the conditions to attract the most important airlines to Peru," Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Roberto Sanchez stated.

"The start of Volaris' operations guarantees new investment and plays a fundamental role in the development of low-cost air connectivity," he added.

Bilateral tourism flows

For his part, Mexican Tourism Ministry's Undersecretary of Quality and Regulation Humberto Hernandez affirmed that Mexico and Peru have a promising tourism future.

"Only between 2020 and 2021, the arrival of Peruvian tourists to Mexico increased by 64%. This year, the number of scheduled flights and seats between both destinations grew 140% and 152%, respectively, compared to 2021," he said.
