Representatives of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) delivered the title that recognizes Arequipa as a Creative City of Gastronomy, in an emotional ceremony held at the Provincial Municipality headquarters on Wednesday.
In addition, this recognition will allow the southern Peruvian 'White City' to participate in cultural events and exchanges, among other international gastronomy-related activities.
In this regard, Deputy Manager of Education and Culture of the Municipality of Arequipa Nilo Cruz affirmed that the title will also allow Arequipa's typical dishes homogenization, as well as promotion of traditional food.
Cruz added that this prize will help the metropolis' gastronomy to achieve the title of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The ceremony was followed by a tasting of traditional dishes from the area. The event took place at Arequipa's Main Square.
The
UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) was created in 2004 to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development.
As is known,
UNESCO seeks to build peace through international cooperation in education, sciences, and culture. Its programs contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals defined in the Agenda 2030 and adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015.
