Google, UNICEF support fight against pandemic in regions across Peru

16:08 | Lima, May. 13.

Around 125,000 people from Loreto, Ucayali, and Huancavelica regions, as well as northern Lima, will benefit from a significant donation from Google, which —in strategic partnership with UNICEF— will strengthen the fight against COVID-19 in Peru.

The US$270,000 donation from Google.org —Google's philanthropic arm— will be earmarked for UNICEF's activities in Peru and will be used for the purchase of oxygen concentrators and personal protective equipment (PPE) for health workers, as well as the installation of hand washing stations.

The oxygen concentrators —used to deliver oxygen therapy to COVID-19 patients— will be distributed to 27 health facilities across Loreto (60), Ucayali (30) and Huancavelica (20) regions.

Meanwhile, the biosafety equipment will be given to 1,500 health workers from 120 primary care level facilities in the above-mentioned regions, as well as in northern Lima.

In addition, hand washing stations will be set up at all vaccination sites operating in said areas.

According to Florencia Sabatini —head of Communications for Google Spanish Speaking Latin America— this donation is part of a total US$33 million donated by Google.org in order to strengthen the fight against the pandemic in Latin America.

Of the total amount, US$1.5 million will go to UNICEF to contribute to humanitarian efforts in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru.

"The program implemented in Peru is fully adapted to its specific and most urgent needs, in the same way as in other countries where UNICEF is operating," she explained.
