The Peruvian Government on Friday called on citizens to wait calmly and patiently for the presidential runoff election's official results to be issued by electoral authorities.

"As President Francisco Sagasti has said, it is the Executive Branch's duty to call for tranquility, in a polarized and complex moment such as the one the country is going through," Education Minister Ricardo Cuenca told reporters.

During a press conference, the Cabinet member reaffirmed the Government's stance to seek that everyone understands it is a complex process which requires the greatest understanding and trust in electoral bodies.

"We are all interested in learning the final results, which will be known once the entities release them," he remarked after referring to the fact that the Executive Branch continues to work tirelessly on issues such as the pandemic.

The official recalled that the Government provided all support to host elections that are clean, transparent, and safe from COVID-19, which have received congratulations from international observers.

According to Cuenca, the Organization of American States' (OAS) Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) has highlighted the participation of the Peruvian people in the second round, and has recognized the work of electoral authorities.

In addition, he said the OAS EOM congratulated the impartiality with which the Government has acted in the midst of the electoral contest and its preparation to host safe elections.

For her part, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Claudia Cornejo affirmed that President Francisco Sagasti at all times complied with the principle of neutrality.

As is known, Peruvians went to the polls to elect a new President of the Republic between candidates Keiko Fujimori and Pedro Castillo in the runoff election on June 6. Whoever wins the election will become Mr. Sagasti's successor and take office on July 28, 2021.
