Peru's national soccer team defeated its Venezuelan counterpart 1-0 in a 2022 World Cup qualifier on Sunday evening at the National Stadium in Lima.

The match kicked off at 8 p.m. (local time) in the presence of around 8,000 spectators.

At the beginning, it took Gareca's players some minutes to position themselves in the field of the National Stadium.

The offensive game of Venezuelans took Peru by surprise, since they put pressure on their opponents since the beginning.

However, little by little, the Peruvian side started to organize itself better during the first half of the match.

Christian Cueva (Peru) scored the only goal of the game, with a right-footed shot from outside the box in the 35th minute.

Both teams needed a victory since the re-white squad went into the game in penultimate place with five points, while Venezuela did so in last place with only four points.

In the previous match, on Thursday, the Incas missed the opportunity to occupy an expectant position after a draw against Uruguay, also in Lima.

With tonight's victory, Peru has racked up eight points to occupy seventh place in the World Cup qualifiers.

It must be pointed out that the Incas' next match will be against Brazil on September 9.
