Peru expects 10% tourism growth, another blueberry exports record

10:53 | Madrid (Spain), Jan. 22.

Peru expects to post a growth rate of 10% in the number of tourists visiting the South American country during 2020, as well as to reach a new record in non-traditional exports, such as those of its successful blueberries, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Edgar Vasquez has affirmed.

The dignitary —who is visiting Spain to attend International Tourism Trade Fair FITUR 2020— has highlighted the business opportunities offered by Peru —at a meeting organized by the Spanish Confederation of Employers' Organizations (CEOE) along with the Spanish Chamber of Commerce and the Secretary of State for Trade.

Likewise, Vasquez has shown his country's interest in attracting foreign investment and fighting in pursuit of a fully-developed economy, after having gone through a complex phase due to corruption and to the United States-China trade war in 2019, which affected Peru, as the price of copper fell.

According to the minister, Peru has all the required conditions to become a more powerful tourist destination, but previous governments had not given it the relevance it deserves, despite the fact that this sector is already the third-largest source of investment in the country, with 4.4 million foreign tourists in 2019.

Spanish companies have asked for measures to promote internationalization and offer collaboration with agreements to avoid double taxation, which do not exist between both countries. Minister Vasquez has shown his support, but he understands the reticence of the Ministry of Economy since the benefits would be seen in the long term.

Moreover, the cabinet member stressed the advantages of Peru, which has been proposed as the
best cultural and gastronomic destination.

It should be noted the Inca country was present in the recent edition of Madridfusion 2020. Besides, there are more than 200 Peruvian restaurants in the Iberian country.

The next challenges for the South American country will be to improve connectivity, for which they will expand destinations and infrastructure with 50 major projects in sanitation, irrigation, energy, mining, transport, and communications, which are included in the Government's 3-year Multiannual Macroeconomic Framework (MMF).
