The Foreign Affairs Ministry on Friday urged international community members —especially friendly nations— to refrain from commenting on the Peruvian electoral process as it will conclude when the National Elections Board (JNE) proclaims the results.

"Expressions in any sense by official authorities in exercise constitute interference and a lack of respect for the Peruvian people," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said via Twitter.

Likewise, the JNE assured that all records from abroad were delivered in due time to the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE).

Furthermore, it stressed that this autonomous body is the only electoral authority responsible for counting votes in this process.

"It is important to remember that Consulates limit themselves to delivering the voting records prepared and signed by board members to ONPE and do not have the power to count votes or to register the number of voters," it concluded.

Peruvians went to the polls to elect a new President of the Republic between candidates Keiko Fujimori and Pedro Castillo in the runoff election on June 6. Whoever wins the election will become President Francisco Sagasti's successor and take office on July 28, 2021.
