13:02 | Cusco (Cusco region), Apr. 20.

The maximum capacity of the Historic Sanctuary and Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu once again stands at 675 daily visitors (equivalent to 30% of the total), since April 19.

This amount was set by the Government for visits to archaeological sites located in provinces at extreme risk level due to COVID-19 contagion.

Indeed, Peru's main tourist attraction —which was declared a World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World— is located in Urubamba, one of Cusco region's five provinces and one of the Inca country's 41 provinces at extreme risk level, according to the latest report issued by the Ministry of Health.

Based on the established measures, sightseers can arrive at the site Mondays to Saturdays, since mandatory social immobility (curfew) is in force 24 hours on Sundays.

Machu Picchu's capacity had stood at 40% from March (equivalent to 897 daily visitors).

However, the increase in COVID-19 infections in Urubamba Province —over recent weeks— forced authorities to put in place new restrictions to avoid an increase in positive cases.

In addition to Urubamba, Cusco, Anta, La Convencion, and Quispicanchi are considered provinces at extreme risk.

Sanitary protocol

To enter Machu Picchu, visitors must strictly comply with the sanitary protocol, which means the permanent use of a face mask and maintaining physical distance, in addition to complying with the security measures ordered by the archaeological site staff.
