The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday affirmed that the 2021 general elections will be absolutely transparent and considered that the recent vacancy motion against him, which is promoted by a sector of Congress, is inopportune.

However, the Head of State said he hopes that the sanity of parliamentarians will prevail in the face of such approach.

When giving an account of the document on the matter received from Parliament, the top official questioned the fact that —although there is much to be done in the country— distraction, distortion, and confrontation are generated, even more so when the 2021 general elections are near.

The statesman stressed that the best way to boost democracy is by empowering the electoral system as provided in the Constitution, and allowing the people to choose their authorities.

"We are not participating in these elections; we do not have a party, but we are providing all the guarantees so that these elections are transparent as well as free, and citizens are the ones who elect their new authorities," he stated.

After ensuring that he will continue working without any distraction —but always thinking about Peru— the President said he is respectful of the independence of powers, adding that he will face the new motion with calm and strength.

Today's remarks were made during a televised address to the nation from the Government Palace in Lima.

President Vizcarra was joined by Prime Minister Walter Martos and other Cabinet members on the occasion.
