Peru President: More than 1.4 million bonuses have already been delivered

13:39 | Lima, Apr. 3.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Friday afternoon reported that more than 1.4 million bonuses (each worth S/380 = about US$107) have already been delivered.

The subsidies are aimed at supporting vulnerable families that would be affected during the social isolation decreed by the Government to stop the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in Peru.

To date, the measure has benefited more than 6 million citizens who are in vulnerable condition.

"It is a help, a palliative to overcome this crisis. However, there are still 1.3 million people who have not received these bonuses but will receive them in the course of this week," he expressed.

Small farmers

The top official indicated that there are some sectors which are not included in the list of beneficiaries.

"One of them may be small farmers. There is talk of an agrarian bond; that is possible, of course. There are families from the small agriculture sector who are going through difficult times, and we are thinking how to support them," he told reporters.

Thus, Mr. Vizcarra said, analyses are being carried out in order to identify the sectors that need to be served with this benefit.

That initial bonus is worth S/380 as it was intended for a period of 15 days. Because of the emergency extension, it will total S/760 (about US$214).

Pension

Moreover, the top official indicated that more than 3 million Pension Fund Administrator (AFP) clients will be allowed to withdraw their funds for up to S/2,000 (about US$563).

Context

Initially set to last from March 16 to 30, the measure has been extended thru April 12.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Friday marks the nineteenth day of mandatory social isolation.
