Peru: Seventh National Justice Board member sworn in

15:26 | Lima, Jan. 20.

Peruvian citizen and lawyer Guillermo Thornberry was sworn in on Monday as the seventh member of the National Justice Board (JNJ).

The ceremony —in charge of the special commission responsible for the selection of the JNJ— was held at the headquarters of the Ombudsman's Office.

Thornberry's appointment was announced last Thursday after the special commission voided the bonus awarded to lawyer Marco Falconi.

With this, the merit table elaborated by the special commission was modified and Thornberry became a full member of the JNJ, whereas Falconi remained as an alternate member.

Last Saturday, Resolution 003-2020-CE was published in El Peruano official gazette announcing the new appointment.

About

The National Justice Board has among its duties to appoint and confirm judges, prosecutors, and heads of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), as well as of the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC).

After taking up duties, the JNJ must remove those who violate their responsibilities —through fair and transparent processes— in order to contribute to the strengthening of the justice administration system and the institutionality of democracy.

The organization is led by former Justice Minister Aldo Vasquez Rios (2015-2016). It is also composed of Jose Avila Herrera, Luz Ines Tello de Ñecco, Imelda Tumialan Pinto, Antonio Humberto de la Haza Barrantes, and Maria Zavala Valladares.
