The ban on the use of private means of transportation on the seventh day of the week —starting September 20— seeks to avoid the multiplication of family and friend gatherings, as well as trips to recreation centers where concentrations of people occur and could lead to increasing COVID-19 contagion risks.

According to Rodriguez, the Health Ministry (Minsa) hopes that the number of COVID-19 infections will continue decreasing in the coming weeks despite the fact that citizens will be allowed to go out on Sundays as the daytime curfew will remain in force only in certain areas. Thus, he called on the population to continue complying with the established prevention measures.

"There is always the possibility of a fresh outbreak or new infections; that is why a gradual decision has been made (...) discouraging social and family gatherings," he said referring to the fact that private transportation means will not be allowed to circulate on Sundays.

The official added that Minsa will permanently monitor the effects of the measure in order to make future decisions.

Rodriguez pointed out that —if citizens comply with measures— the number of infected people should not increase.

The number of daily COVID-19 cases is going backwards in the country, but there are still areas —such as Lima— where that trend is slower, he said.

Rodriguez explained that the factors —which explain the permanence of the pandemic in the capital city— are that Lima hosts one third of the country's population (32 million), a mass transportation system, and more dynamic economic activities.
