Peru will have a total of 3.8 million vaccine doses this May, which will enable the South American country to meet the objective of immunizing older adults aged above 60 nationwide by the end of June, Arturo Granados, the spokesman for the Ministry of Health (Minsa), affirmed on Tuesday.

"This will enable us to advance in our purpose, with the goal of reaching the end of June covering those over 60 years of age who belong to the most vulnerable population group," Granados told Andina news agency.

The official said that very intense work is being carried out in Lima with district mayors in order to activate vaccination centers in their jurisdictions.

Granados indicated that —as of April 19— nearly 70,000 adults over the age of 80 have been vaccinated, representing 60% of citizens in this age group, who must be immunized in 22 districts belonging to Lima Metropolitan Area and Callao region.

He added that next weekend —May 23 to 25— the immunization will continue in 27 districts of these jurisdictions.

"There is a lot of commitment from the families. Besides, we have seen plenty of joy and hope in those over 80, who have had a very emotional day that encourages us to continue working," he stressed.

Granados explained that adults —who have not been vaccinated to date— are those who cannot get immunized following a medical evaluation, while others —who have mobility problems— did not get the corresponding information or simply did not want to be immunized.
