Peru's 2020 elections: First official results to be released Sunday night

12:51 | Lima, Jan. 22.

National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) Chief Manuel Cox will release the first official results of the 2020 extraordinary parliamentary elections on Sunday night.

"As usual, our national chief will release the first results. There is no set hour for it because it depends on the information consolidation we may have (…) but it will be on Sunday night, for sure," ONPE Deputy Planning Manager Milagros Uipan said.

The first announcement will provide information about the votes to political groups, and not to specific candidates (preferential voting), or the distribution of seats at the new Parliament.

However, although the announcement will be about political groups, people will be able to find information about specific candidates and preferential voting on the organization's website.

"Detailed information will be available on the website, but announced results will be sorted by political groups, progress made, and region," she explained.

According to the official, given that this is a special election, a trend cannot be known with 20% or 30% of votes counted. The task is to consolidate the results of each of the 26 electoral constituencies.

"In fact, the results will be sorted by region and total votes cast nationwide. Getting a definite result or conclusion is more complicated," she expressed.

In this sense, Uipan said that —unlike other elections— the count of votes in Lima may take longer since candidates compete for 36 seats and, therefore, they will gain more preferential votes.

The new 130 legislators will serve the remaining period of the 2016-2021 legislative tenure, following the dissolution of Congress.
