Peruvian Prime Minister Walter Martos on Tuesday highlighted the use of the digital wallet as means of secure payment that reduces the risk of contagion by coronavirus (COVID-19) while boosting financial inclusion.

Joined by Development and Social Inclusion Minister Patricia Donayre, the Cabinet Chief led this morning the launch of the digital wallet pilot program at San Jose Market, in Lima's Jesus Maria district.

The high-ranking official highlighted the enabling of this secure payment pilot —an outcome of the articulated efforts undertaken by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers through the Secretariat of Digital Government, the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion, the Peruvian Association of Banks (ASBANC), and municipalities.

"The great lesson this pandemic has taught us is that the only way out of a crisis is by working together. This pilot plan is an evidence of the coordinated and joint efforts of various sectors," he said after indicating that the pilot will be replicated in other districts nationwide.

He added that this initiative is part of the financial inclusion policy promoted by the Government and that it will serve to prevent contagion which usually occurs through the use of physical money.

For her part, Minister Donayre pointed out that the use of digital wallets is an important mechanism for the population to have safe money on their mobile phones.

Moreover, Jesus Maria district Mayor Jorge Quintana assured that currently 60% of vendors in this market have joined the digital wallet mechanism.

Through digital wallets, operations or purchases are made in any establishment immediately, thus avoiding physical contact and exposure to contagion.
