Peru's President: The great challenges require us to act responsibly

The great challenges facing Peru require the State powers to act wisely and responsibly, President Martin Vizcarra has affirmed.

"Let's all continue working together for what truly matters to all Peruvians," he wrote on Twitter.

Within this framework, the top official urged State-run institutions to continue joining efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and corruption, boost the economic reactivation, and strengthen democracy with the aim of improving the quality of life of those who need it most.

As is known, the majority of Congress members on Friday night decided to reject an impeachment motion against President Vizcarra. Therefore, the top official will remain in office.

The decision was the outcome of 32 votes in favor, 78 against, and 15 abstentions. It must be noted that the impeachment needed 87 votes in favor to be passed.

Earlier on Friday, the President attended Parliament's plenary session to give a speech before the debate.

During his speech at the Congress Chamber, Mr. Vizcarra affirmed that his behavior has always been correct, adding that he has not committed any illegal acts.
