President Castillo: Gov't committed to ending inequality, corruption in Peru

10:02 | Washington D.C. (U.S.), Sep. 20.

In his speech before the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) on Monday morning, the President of the Republic Pedro Castillo affirmed that his Government is committed to ending inequality and the scourge of corruption.

"By assuming the mandate, we have taken up the fight to end inequality, to defeat the huge scourge of corruption. Corruption is a huge problem in Peru. There are so many corrupt people, that we can export them. Corruption has led to a lack of food in families and of benefits for the population," he affirmed.

During his participation at a Session of the OAS Permanent Council —in the presence of the Secretary-General of said hemispheric organization, Luis Almagro— Mr. Castillo conveyed the greetings of his family, of the Shipibo, Conibo, Awajun, Aymara, and Quechua ethnic groups, as well as of all men and women in Peru.

"I am a son of this Andean people. Besides being a teacher, I am a peasant patrol, with great honor. Today, as President of Peru, we open the doors of not only the Government Palace, but also the Government as a whole, including regional and local governments, as well as guilds across the country," he expressed.

The Peruvian leader also thanked the OAS for acknowledging the triumph of "this son of the people," for being firm and not allowing others to set its agenda, since democracy implies an open, genuine, and voluntary participation of the people and its organizations.

"Democracy cannot allow a spirit of discrimination. I am a teacher. I studied at a school with cracked walls. The parents at the community still use a lantern, as there is no electricity. Many families do not have a water faucet. The parents at the community continue to cultivate the land and wait for rain to plant, but when they produce, they cannot deliver their products to the market," Mr. Castillo commented.

On the other hand, the Head of State also called on investors and entrepreneurs to invest in Peru, a mining country with great wealth and whose benefits should reach every citizen.
